Besides seals there is another mammal that can be found in the Eastern Scheldt: the porpoise. You often do not see much more of a swimming porpoise than the top part of its back with the back fin, when the animal comes up to breathe. Especially when there are waves they can be difficult to spot. If the water is as smooth as a mirror, you have much more chance.
With some luck during a boat tour on the Easter Scheldt. But there are also good places to spot porpoise from land:
In ruim zes uur wordt het vloed – het water wordt hoger, daarna wordt het in dezelfde tijd eb – het water wordt weer lager. Eb en vloed ontstaan door de aantrekkingskracht van de maan op het water op aarde.
De maan trekt als het ware aan het water, waardoor het water in de zeeën een bepaalde kant op beweegt. De aarde draait om haar eigen as en om de zon heen. Daardoor is de plek waar de maan het sterkst aan het water trekt telkens verschillend.
